Rose of the Month

July 2005

Mary Rose
David Austin “English’ Rose

Mary Rose is a wonderful name for a successful platform for its owner.  And what a delight it is, despite having been on the rose scene since 1983.  While most all David Austin hybridized rose do well in Connecticut’s climate, Mary Rose is near the top of that list.  Despite the challenges of the past three winters, she has not only survived, but flourished.  And adding to the delight in my garden, she is one of the very first, and one of the most generous bloomers.  She started in early June, and by the 10th of June had more than 80 blooms- most over three inches in diameter.  And due to its remontant bloom we can expect to enjoy blossoms for most of the summer.

Mary Rose is a very double, medium pink rose, deep pink when the bloom I is new, fading somewhat to soft pink with time.  But it stays well on the bush, is a clean bloom and very tidy.  The plant lost very little of its stems in the past winter, and started the spring at nearly four feet.  There is a light scent.
