Come to the 2006 Yankee District Fall Rose Show!

For the past few years there has been a rose event on Cape Cod the weekend following Labor Day. Daytime events have included shows, a judging school, and a judging seminar, always followed by the “Lobsterfest,” a New England clambake and social event on the Bass River beach in Dennis.

This year’s event, to be held at the Harwich Community Center, includes the 2006 Yankee District Rose Show, an opportunity for exhibitors from Greenwich to Caribou and all points in between to bring roses for a friendly competition. The highlights of the show are the four district challenge trophies, including the J. Horace McFarland Memorial Trophy for five individual hybrid tea blooms, the Ralph S. Moore District Award for seven exhibition stage miniature roses, and the All-America Rose Selections Perpetual Challenge Trophy for three AARS hybrid tea roses. All these awards are offered in each district of the American Rose Society. Recognizing the important role of shrub roses in gardens in our climate, the Yankee District has established a new district, the Yankee Rosarian Trophy, for three stems of shrub roses. Winning any of these prestigious awards is an honor of which any exhibitor can be proud.

In addition, we are providing an abbreviated, but comprehensive, horticultural schedule. Royalty classes are being offered for hybrid teas/grandifloras, miniatures, mini floras and old garden roses (Dowager and Victorian), and floribundas, climbers, and classic and modern shrubs are also provided for.

Although plans have not been finalized as of this moment, arrangements will also be included in the show.

To have blooms for the show, it is advisable to cut back the plants six to seven weeks before the show, or roughly the end of July. Since it is often hot and dry at that time, be sure to give the plants plenty of water, and you will be rewarded with your show specimens.

Be sure to put the weekend of September 9 on your calendar. You will have a great time on the cape, when the weather is still great and the crowds have thinned, you will enjoy being with your rose friends from around the district, and you will see some beautiful roses. And, you may just win a trophy!
