2006-07                Recommended Roses for Low Pesticide Use

The following roses are recommended for New England Gardens and were selected by CRS members and Consulting Rosarians Angie and Mike Chute to make up the spectacular 94 bush sustainable public rose garden at the University of Rhode Island.  This garden was made possible by a generous $25,000 donation by eighty eight year old Master Gardener Chester (Chet) Clayton, and the planting and additional preparatory work was performed by the URI Master Gardeners and the Rhode Island Rose Society.  The garden was dedicated in 2006 and is located on the URI campus in Kingston behind the cooperative Extension Education Center (Route 38 of I-95 from CT).

The criteria for selection of the sixteen varieties of roses for the "Chester Clayton Sustainable Rose Garden" were "to be healthy and attractive without the use of pesticides".
You will note that many are recently introduced bright-colored shrubs known for disease resistance.  The others are definitely tried and true roses of very high regard that will not only survive the New England winters, but will flourish.
The recommended low-maintenance roses are:
Abbaye de Cluny, New Dawn, Home Run, Julia Child, Pretty Lady, Knockout, Baby Love, Lady Elsie May, Outta the Blue, Bonica, Dublin Bay, Sally Holmes, Westerland, Yellow Submarine, My Hero and Dortmund.
